About Softscape Installation & Design

New Plants:

We will listen to your flower, trees, and plant preferences and can give our expert suggestions for what will work best during each New England season. We have the equipment to help remove mature shrubs and can even do stump removal. Read more…

Plant selection can often be overwhelming. There are many options to choose from. We can help you narrow down those options. We will listen to your preferences and can give our suggestions as well for plants in the areas where you are looking to enhance. We work closely with a couple local nurseries and if we do not know the answer to a plant question we know where to get the answer.

Once we speak with you about your thoughts for the project, we can draw up a plant bed design based on your budget as well as based on plant availability at the local nurseries. And of course, if revisions are needed, we can do that.

The hardest part may be the last step. This is when we leave and you need to consistently water your new plants. Hand watering is of course an option. But if you would like a more “set it and forget it” method, we can discuss those options with you.

Shrub Removal & Transplanting:

We have the equipment to help remove mature shrubs along with the stump.

We can transplant shrubs of different sizes as well.  There are many reasons for transplanting a shrub.  You may just simply want it in a different location, maybe it has outgrown its current space.  You may have plans for a grand patio and outdoor kitchen and you have some plants that need to be moved to a new spot.  Possibly you hate looking at the shrubs and just want them gone.  And it may be that the shrub is dying and removing it is the best option.

Stump Removal:

Often, we come upon people who have recently had large trees removed and the tree removal company either left the stumps or ground them down.  Either way you may still have a stump possibly in the way or a large pile of stump grindings that need to be disposed.  If you no longer want the tree stump, it is best to remove the stump in its entirely rather than have it ground down and then have to do additional work to remove and dispose the stump grindings.  If your plan is to grow grass or plant something new in the area where there is a tree stump it is best to remove the stump in its entirely rather than grind it down.  Over time the remaining part of the stump can decompose underground and either cause a depression in your grass or possibly be in the way of roots from the new trees you planted.

Lawn Repair & Installation:

Oftentimes starting over from scratch with a new lawn is not be needed.

There are many things that can be done to improve and repair an existing lawn. This may include dethatching, aerating, adding additional soil, and spreading new seed and starter fertilizer.

And there may be situations when a brand-new lawn is best. There are a few options for the installation of new lawns. But all include first preparing the soil properly. And then you can choose from rolls of sod (established grass), hydroseeding, or regular seeding. The sod will be your most expensive option but of course will give you the instant result of grass.  And there are situations where sod may be the best option.

Spreading grass seed is the other option.  When completed in the late Summer/Fall time and followed up with a consistent watering regimen and future fertilizing/pest control regiment, you will have good results.

No matter what, a new lawn or a repaired lawn is not a “one shot deal.” If you want to protect your grass investment you must follow a maintenance plan that aids in preventing weeds and pests and always provides your grass with the nutrients it needs.

Dethatching, aerating, and overseeding are great mechanical ways to keep your lawn looking nice.
